Your first trip to the gym can be completely overwhelming. But you need to keep going back or you’ll get stuck in the same rut as you did last year and the year before that. Stick it out and you’ll soon shoot from beginner status to fitness fanatic!
If you’re mildly intimidated of going to gym for any reason, you’re not alone. People wander around the gym looking like deer in the headlights for their first few sessions until they familiarise themselves with where everything is.
But, in no time, they’re super comfortable to be there!
The same will happen to you… If you just stick with it through this difficult period, everything gets better.

You probably haven’t realised that you’ve already done the hardest part. You’ve made the decision to start exercising!
Well done! Now let’s get to the next step.
· Don’t be afraid: Everyone started out as a beginner! And by all means, stand at the far back of classes and use the treadmill in the far back corner of the gym, but, whatever you do, go!
· Set realistic targets for yourself: Think about what it is you want to achieve. Set monthly targets to start off with and go bigger from there. You can set targets like “achieve a slow job on the treadmill after a month of walking”. No goal is too small; you’re likely to stick to your routine if your goals are achievable!
· Be realistic: It doesn’t take a week or a month to go from a beginner to a fitness fanatic. It’s going to be hard to motivate yourself some days, but find ways of hanging in there and keep at it. It does become easier!
· Learn about your environment: Familiarise yourself with the equipment and where the facilities are located in the gym. If this involves hiring a personal trainer for one session, go for it! You’ll benefit much more from your workout if you’re using everything at your disposal.
It’s all up to you from here. Get moving and get your butt in the gym! With some dedication, you’ll have gone from beginner to fitness fanatic in no time.
