Remember the power you have

You were born into greatness.
No evidence exists to suggest otherwise.
But the chattering voices of critics and cynics may have made you forget how powerful you are.
You are a lion, not a sheep.
You are a victor, not a victim.
You are a leader, never a follower.
Within you lives vast reservoirs of beautiful creativity.
Potential so bright it blinds my eyes.
Bravery so heroic it inspires our hearts.
It’s time to remember how powerful you are.
Failure may cross your path.
It is simply training for your strength.
Doubt may enter your mind.
That’s just a test to see how much you want your dreams.
Apathy may set in. Action is your antidote.
No matter what, relentlessly move ahead.
Because this is your time. Now is your moment. Today is your day.
And our world demands that you rise to your best.
So you model the acute possibility your life was designed to be.
And when you win, your example will bring the rest of us with you.
And when you fly, you’ll give the rest of us our wings as well.
…BE GREAT TODAY.
We at Life Retreat love Robin Sharma, the internationally acclaimed thought leader and speaker. This is one of his quotes that I personally love to try to live by. Living in your comfort zone can be nice, but if you truly want to be great then you have to expand and live beyond that zone.

Rapper Chad & Grammy Winner Soko Partner on New Track

With South African hip hop sweeping awards and enjoying a meteoric rise in the country and region, Pretoria based rapper Chad, formerly known as “Chad Da Don” has partnered with Zimbabwean Grammy Award winning producer Brian Soko on his new single titled ‘E.F.T.’.
The track E.F.T. which stands for ‘Electronic Funds Transfer’ has been billed as an intense, high energy ‘working people’s anthem’ or ‘Pay Day Anthem’ The song was produced by Soko and will see him featuring on a track for the first time.
Chad shared, ‘I am really excited about this song, I worked with Soko a year ago and we stayed in touch, so when he came to South Africa this time we got in the studio and EFT was the first song we did. It’s a track we believe the fans and ordinary South Africans will relate to and love. ”
Soko who won three Grammy awards in February this year for producing BeyoncĂ©’s ‘Drunk In Love’, is no stranger to South Africa, he has produced music for various South African artists most notably Cassper Nyovest’s most recent hit ‘Phumakim’, which was nominated for song of the year at the 2014 Metro Awards and K.O’s debut solo single “Mission Statement.”
Soko said about EFT, “ I am so proud of Chad and he has continued to improve since we first met. We have a great working relationship and for the first time I felt comfortable leaving my voice on a record I believe is a winner. The song is about working hard and getting paid. We felt as though we wanted to make a song for the common working man, for all the people that work a regular 9-5 job and get their paycheck at the end of the month.”
The artwork for EFT was released on Tuesday July 16th to a great reception on social media, the song is out now and available to download for FREE BY CLICKING HERE

Whatever You Are, Be A Good One

Our quote of the day is from the great Abraham Lincoln:

Whatever you are, be a good one

Finding your purpose is one of the most exciting and fulfilling experiences in life. It is the most important discovery you can make as it informs the very essence of who you are and why you do what you do. When you arrive at the point of truly understanding your unique purpose in life, make a firm commitment to remain true to who you are. Don’t allow anyone to make you feel that your unique contribution to this world is not valued. Be the best you can be and make your mark!

Weekly Round Up From Life Retreat

Happy Friday everyone! To coincide with our first official newsletter (sign up here, it’s awesome), we wanted to introduce a weekly Life Retreat round-up of some of our best and most interesting articles over the past week. We like to think every post we make adds something, but we’ve picked five pieces that really stood out, or made us think.
So last Friday, we learned about a new movement in hair care. It’s called “Unwash – The New Clean”. Sounds crazy, right? It’s a whole new way of cleaning your hair, and it’s becoming more and more popular by the day. Check out the article, here’s a sample:
The new movement in hair care is here. It challenges the conventional wisdom and vicious cycle of shampoo, condition, style, repeat…Welcome to Unwash: a new method that cleans hair in a more civilized way.
You can read out full article here. Please do, it’s well worth it.

As we all know, Mandela Day was last Saturday. We did our part to honour the great man’s legacy and give a little back to those who need it most. I personally was digging trenches for a great charity based in Grabouw, and my various family members were helping out in Cape Town and Khayelitsha (handing out soup and painting houses in the informal settlements with fire resistant paint – more to come on that soon!)
Mandela said many profound things during his life, and you can read one of his inspirational quotes we posted on Mandela Day here!
On Tuesday, Savannah posted an incredible article detailing her trip to Namibia with some of her family and friends. We really do urge you to read it. Learn what a “Zeiss Refractor” does (you won’t believe it), read about the world’s biggest crystal, and join Savannah on the wild ride they experienced at Sandwich Harbour:
On the way we stopped to view 1000s of pink flamingoes. Honestly, no photo can do justice to the sight of the most awesome dunes, with the sea breaking at their base. We saw jackal and springbok. We went on exhilarating roller coaster rides, up and down the dunes.
Read the full and amazing article here.

Also on Tuesday, we posted a surprising article about the supposed health benefits of food such as dried fruit and soy milk. We wanted to dispel a few myths that lots of people have about certain foods. Interesting and informative, take five minutes out of your day to read up on what we discovered:
I recently found out that my detox tea contains “senna leaves”, which are associated with liver failure. And ever since, I’ve set out to see what other potential harmful ingredients are lurking in my (and your) cupboards.
I was surprised to find that three of my favourite “health” foods – soy milk, granola and dried fruits – aren’t actually that healthy. At all!
Read our full article here.
And finally, on Wednesday we posted an article about Onjala, the private nature reserve that Savannah mentioned in her Namibia article. Featuring some of the most incredible photographs we have ever seen, we urge you to read it, if only for those photos. Our post details everything you can do at Onjala (including one of the most stunning outdoor spas we have seen) as well as how to get there and how to book a stay:
Here, where the dense bush savannah is inhabited solely by animal life, an unexpected opening appears and reveals giraffes, black wildebeest, zebras and oryx congregating to trade the news of the day. Rising above all this is a mountainside, dotted with the pointed roofs of our lodge bungalows. This is Onjala, a gem cradled in the arms of Africa.
Read the full piece here, and check out a photograph from the article below.

This is the bush!
That was our first weekly round up of the best thought provoking, entertaining or interesting pieces from Life Retreat. We hope you enjoyed reading as much we did writing. We would love to hear from you about which article you enjoyed most.
Please share and comment below on your favourite article from the past seven days! Should you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to email us at info@liferetreat.co.za. We write these articles because we want to connect with you, the reader. All input is welcome

How To Consume Alcohol Safely While Maintaining a Healthy Weight

I am someone who enjoys a drink or two socially. But I, like many others, have often wondered whether I should cut alcohol out entirely to maintain a healthy weight. Is it worth it? Does that even work when I only drink relatively small amounts, and only at weekends? So I did some research and came across an article that gives ways to consume alcohol safely while maintaining a healthy weight.

Drinking alcohol occasionally and in moderation usually does not cause health problems, but consuming large amounts on a regular basis frequently constitutes alcohol abuse and ushers in a number of different health problems. Here are some helpful strategies for consuming alcohol safely:
Eat healthy meals before drinking in moderation. In addition, eat snacks that are low in salt and fat in between drinks as this slows down the body’s absorption of alcohol.
So if you’re an occasional or social drinker like myself, the advice to take is to eat healthy meals before drinking, or snack on low fat and low salt foods between drinks to slow the absorption rate.

Take days off from drinking alcohol, even if only small amounts of alcohol are consumed regularly. This deters the development of alcohol abuse and addiction patterns, as well as the onset of organ damage associated with habitual alcohol consumption.
Keep track of the types of drinks that are consumed as some drinks contain more alcohol than others. Keeping track also provides an indication of when the drinking should stop.

If controlled properly, moderate drinking is often a great way to spend an evening with friends, or at bars and clubs. If you’re worried about maintaining your weight, try out some of the tips above and see if they make a positive difference to you.

Welcome To Onjala

The first impression is simply astonishing.

Welcome to this 1,700 hectare private nature reserve, located a mere 40 minute’s drive from Windhoek airport.

It’s yours now. Feel free to move around as you like, making friends with everyone or everything that crosses your path.

Spend hours floating in the waterfall pool or being pampered and revitalized at our ZenSations Spa. Inside our comfortable suites, you can listen at night while the wildlife sings you to sleep with their own unique lullaby.

At breakfast in the garden the next morning, you won’t be quite sure whether it was real or a dream.
Onjala can be the opening scene in your journey or the grand finale. Either way, it’s always a time of enchantment within the treasures of the African spirit.

Environment
We subscribe to environment-friendly practices and sustainable tourism.
With a low rainfall and high solar radiation yield, water recycling and renewable energy are our main focuses. The lodge-own water treatment plant supplies water used for flush-toilets and irrigation.
A solar heating system generates the majority of the lodge’s hot water supply. Further attention is given to correct waste management and de-bushing measurements to rehabilitate the formally over-utilized farm land by excessive grazing.

Accommodation
Onjala has 23 rooms and can accommodate a maximum of 51 guests. This maintains the personal atmosphere we value so highly. We are always happy to welcome families, and to advise you of the most child-friendly deals and activities.
We would like to assure you that all of our employees enjoy having children around and know how to get along with them.

Lodge Room

Built in an unconventional architectural style, rough natural stone of the area was used to blend unobtrusively with its backdrop.

The eleven duplex rooms in the main structure with large sliding glass doors and small lounges are comfortably furnished. The lower balcony overlooks the surrounding scenery and the second balcony on the upper level looks onto the central courtyard with small tropical garden, pool and waterfall.

Bungalow Room
Four freestanding bungalows, each with two separate units, are tucked away in the bush a small distance from the main lodge, affording increased tranquility and privacy.

The units are spacious and well appointed with large en-suite bathrooms. The decor reflects the warm colours of Africa, creating a calm, restful atmosphere. The wrap-around veranda invites to linger and take in the sights and sounds of the surrounding bush, possibly sighting an occasional warthog or antelope in close proximity.

Panorama Suite
Four free-standing exquisitely appointed Panorama Suites welcome with added luxury and privacy.

Each of the thatched chalets offers a spacious sleeping area, lounge, dressing area and a generous bathroom.

Air conditioning ensures a comfortable stay, regardless of the weather. The peacefulness and tranquility of the surrounding bush can be soaked up, while enjoying an ice-cold drink from the mini-bar.

ZenSations SPA

Onjala is a place for your body and soul. We have a high quality spa on Onjala. Guests can enjoy facial treatments, body massages, body wraps and hand and foot treatments, as well as several different water treatments. Get Ready To Roast Chicken In A Whole New Way!

I was sat on my computer in my office this morning, and all I could hear was the sound of rain pouring down all around me outside.

It is at times like these that I want to stay inside all day. Stay warm, work warm, and eat warm. That last one got me thinking. What is a real Winter warming recipe that satisfies completely? I got to searching for a few great recipes from books and online, and I whittled them down to just one.

A beautifully roasted and succulent chicken is comfort food at its best. The black truffle jus with a nip of brandy adds a rich depth of flavour.

1 whole free range chicken, rinsed and dried
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 tbsp (30 ml) NOMU Roast Rub
Sea Salt and Black Pepper
2 onions, peeled and sliced
2 carrots, peeled and roughly chopped
1 piece celery stick, roughly chopped
1 small bunch thyme
4 cloves garlic, bruised
2 bay leaves

Black truffle jus:
1 tbsp (15 ml) flour
¼ cup (60 ml) brandy
1 tsp (5 ml) Chicken stock
Stirred into 1 cup (250 ml) water
1 tsp (5 ml) black truffle oil
Preheat the oven to 200 ÂşC.

Rub the chicken with a little olive oil and season well with the NOMU Roast Rub, salt and pepper. Set aside.

Place the onions, carrots, celery, thyme, garlic and bay leaves into a roasting tray and position the chicken directly on top.

Roast in the oven for 20 minutes, and then reduce heat to 180 ÂşC and roast for a further 50 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through completely.
Remove from the oven and place chicken onto carving board to rest for 10 minutes before slicing.

BLACK TRUFFLE JUS

Place the roasting tray, together with all the roasted vegetables onto the stovetop over a moderate heat. Stir in the flour and fry gently to form a lightly golden paste.

Add the brandy and prepared chicken stock and stir. Simmer for a few minutes, stirring continuously, so that the mixture reduces slightly to a thickened jus. Be sure that you scrape all of the sticky bits from the tray, as this is where the flavour lies.

Lastly, stir in the truffle oil and then strain into a small gravy boat.

Serve with the roast chicken.

Roast chicken is always great, but the richness and depth of flavour in this particular recipe was what set it apart for me. We would love to hear from you about your experiments with roasting chicken. Or indeed any other great Winter warming recipes you know of. Comment in the section below and please share.

Inspirational Quotes - Life

Life is hard but so very beautiful.
– Abraham Lincoln

Keep an enthusiastic and positive attitude at all times. You are fully in control of how you build your business and personal life. If you see it as a house-building project, you are not only the owner, but also the architect, the builder and even the interior designer! How do you want it to look like?

If you view life as beautiful and worth celebrating, even during tough times, it will impact how you build and what the emerging structure will look like. Create with passion and enthusiasm!

We think this is a beautiful quote. Tell us what you think in the comments below and please share this post. See you same time tomorrow for the next one!

Experiencing Namibia

After a relaxing half empty flight to Windhoek, we said goodbye to Sue, my sister-in-law, and, the 4 intrepid travelers set off. Myself, our son Greg, (whom we shall call Greggie, to avoid any confusion for the remainder of the trip), my brother Greg, and our little niece, Olivia. I had a basic itinerary as to where we were going, and what we were doing. But, I chose to do as little planning as possible, and to go with the flow, with no expectations. Our main goal being "experiencing Nambia". After driving through a landscape of scrub, we arrived to a warm welcome at Onjala Lodge.
What a pleasant surprise. The lodge has a distinctive African theme, and is set is a game lodge/ spa. What more could anyone ask for? After settling in, and eating an early dinner, we set of for stargazing. The little white domes that we had spotted earlier, actually house telescopes, one of which is a ‘Zeiss refractor', which is only one of 6 in the world. We felt as if we were in a Star Wars movie as the roof rolled back, and they automatically focused on various planets, stars and constellations. These included Jupiter, and the jewellery box cluster, amongst other twinkling sights. The next couple of days were a whirlwind of game drives, eating, walking, sunset drinks, and so much more.

With one of our highlights being, sitting in the jacuzzi overlooking the vast expanse of Africa. We all had Shaman Chakra oil healing journeys, and massages, which were truly amazing. The staff were so kind and caring, and we felt right at home.

Sadly, we had to leave, and we made our dusty journey into Windhoek, while wishing, that the spa pampers had been at the end of our journey, and not the beginning. As the old saying goes, we felt as if we had travelled from diamonds into dust.

Traveling is always an adventure. And so we arrived in Windhoek. I thought that I had no expectations, but I had expected more interesting things to do in Windhoek.

The next couple of days were not easy, as my brother Greg was sick. Little Olivia kept us all going, as the Angel entertained us daily, with her beautiful smile and chatting. We whisked through Windhoek in a day, visiting craft markets and driving around. We had fun evenings chatting to our lovely hosts and sharing stories, and wine.

After a couple of days, Greggie and I set off. We sadly said goodbye to the others, and jumped into our taxi to travel to the unknown. We had a pleasant trip from Windhoek to Swakopmund, where we both managed to catch up on some reading.

We arrived that evening at Atlantic villa, to a warm welcome, a beautiful, comfy, clean room with heating, and a TV. After ordering takeaways we sat in bed pondering through all of the options of what we would do for the next few days.

We set off into town, and after a tasty breakfast, our 1st stop was the Crystal Gallery, which houses the worlds biggest crystal. Apart from this vision being overwhelming, the sight of all of the other crystals and semi precious stones blew us away.

One of the highlights was the amazing jewellery, of which numerous items are on my wish list. After this was a brisk exploratory walk through town, we ended up at the Village Cafe for a late lunch. There really is nothing like beautifully prepared home made food.

We walked to the end of the Pierre, looked through all the curio shops, and popped in at the tourism centre. And then suddenly, as always as the temperature made it's radical drop, from warm to freezing, and we rushed off to the comfort of our little room. In the next couple of days, we visited a cosmetic factory where they make their products from the Nama fruit, had photos with the Owambo ladies, ate oysters, chatted, watched TV, and even managed to get some work done on the Internet.

The highlight was Sandwich Harbour, where we set out with our guide in a powerful, old 4 wheel drive. On the way we stopped to view 1000s of pink flamingoes. Honestly, no photo can do justice to the sight of the most awesome dunes, with the sea breaking at their base.

We saw jackal and springbok. We went on exhilarating roller coaster rides, up and down the dunes. The most amazing experience ended with champagne and snacks in the middle of nowhere. We were more than ready to set off to Sossuvlei after 5 days in Swakopmund. Feeling like weary travellers, we had thankfully found transport, which had saved us from another 2 day journey. The next step of our adventure began, and ended in the desert.

The vast open space has a tranquil feeling, and calming effect. Our drive was pleasant, and we ended up at the Namib desert lodge, a little oasis in the vast expanse of nowhere. What impressed us most is that the lodge runs all of its electricity off solar panels, and all the water is from boreholes. More eating, (sadly, not too healthy), drinking (mainly copious amounts of water), sunset watching and dune viewing.

The highlight of our trip was Dead Vlei, and the climbing of Big Daddy Dune. The Greg's decided to climb up the steep side, to challenge themselves. Knowing, I would be a handicap, I stayed behind, and for a few hours really experienced the Vlei.

I learnt more about my camera, and experimented with photo taking. I meditated, and felt incredibly peaceful, surrounded by the awesomeness of huge red dunes. I saw butterflies and birds, and listened to various tour guides explaining things, including that most of the trees, had lived for approx 300 years, and had been dead for approx 600.

After an early night, we got up at the crack of dawn, ate a quick breakfast and left. We are now going home, feeling very content. Greggie and I have had a wonderful experience. While travelling, I have been reading, The Power of the Heart, by Baptist De Pape, and I have been focusing on feeling this journey in my heart. I will go home with a warm heart, and feeling grateful for so much that this journey has given me.

It has been amazing to spend such quality time with the Gregs. I love more than anything in the world, doing things together with our whole family. But, I do enjoy one on one quality time with each of our children. Greggie has been such an awesome travelling companion. I am so proud of all our children, and I guess Greggie has reminded me of their amazing traits.

He is great company, easy going, adventurous, resilient, motivated, goal orientated, kind and considerate. I am really close to all my siblings, and how lucky we all are to be able to share so many experiences together, with our families.

It is always a joy to be with little children, and spending time with my precious God daughter has been so much fun. I am going home full of motivation and inspiration. "When I admire the wonders of a sunset or the beauty of the moon, my soul expands in the worship of the creator. " Mahatma Gandhi

Olaplex Haircare Wonder Product

Go Blonder & Bolder without Damage or Breakage with OLAPLEX

Have you heard about the “wonder product” that has taken the haircare industry worldwide by storm? It’s called OLAPLEX and it is now available in over 400 salons (growing daily) in South Africa.

Your salon experience will never be the same again. With this revolutionary product you can #repair #protect and #discover a whole new world of colour and endless styling possibilities. The only thing that OLAPLEX changes is EVERYTHING!
OLAPLEX repairs and rebuilds broken disulphide hair bonds caused by chemical processes such as colouring or using thermal heated tools before any damage is done to your hair. These processes break down disulphide bonds that are essential for hair elasticity, health and strength. You can choose to use OLAPLEX as a pre-treatment or alongside your colouring or lightening or both in cases where your hair is damaged and you want to colour or lighten.

Unlike conditioning or protein treatments OLAPLEX repairs the hair from within. This is precisely why it’s dubbed the “holy grail for hair colour” by Hollywood’s A-listers including our very own Charlize Theron. OLAPLEX is genius and affords you the opportunity to get more out of your salon visits.
Here’s how it works: your hairdresser starts off with the OLAPLEX No.1 Bond Multiplier by adding it directly into your lightener or colour. After rinsing colour from your hair, he/she applies the OLAPLEX No.2 Bond Perfector for a minimum of 20 minutes then it’s time for a rinse, shampoo, and condition. Your stylist can even leave it in your hair to use as a cutting lotion.
It doesn’t end here, you can go home with OLAPLEX No.3 Hair Perfector to maintain your hair’s health at home, in between salon visits. It is not a moisturiser, so you should continue washing your hair with your favourite shampoo and conditioner after using it.
You’re going to love this. OLAPLEX works on everyone! It’s been tested on virtually every hair type and it works! Be it Asian, Caucasian, African Ethnic groups, previously chemically processed and virgin hair. Remember, OLAPLEX is an in-salon service. You need to ask your salon/hairdresser for the treatment. Failure of Orthodox Medicine

When my father died last year of cancer it took me some time to fully grasp the manner of his passing and to realise my own culpability in allowing the doctors to destroy whatever dignity death might have allowed him if I had had the courage and the knowledge to stop the torture.

I allowed the doctors to conduct nuclear war on a (clearly) dying 83-year-old man — what they described as “palliative” radiation. In my father’s case, and I believe in the case of many thousands more, such interventions can be a shocking, perverse form of professional “kindness” that is built into the orthodox medical machine that just does not (want to) know when to stop.

The result of their efforts was a death without honour for a man subjected to totally unnecessary radiation that almost immediately sapped the life-spirit from his body and soul, left him broken, unable to consciously bring closure to his life. I estimate the professionals pocketed about R80 000 for their handiwork in those last few weeks. In hindsight, I should have paid them triple just to let my dad die with some dignity.

The reality of all this came into sharp focus this week when I came upon a remarkable piece in the latest New Yorker magazine written by Atal Gwande, a surgeon/journalist (yes, there is such a species) with (literally) inside knowledge and acute insight into the treatment and care of terminal patients.
